Boy mechanic off to China
Nanjing Night Net

[BB] SYDNEY – A Victorian boy will spend his 13th birthday working as a motorcycle mechanic at the first MotoGP event to be held in China. Brodie Walters, 12, from Mildura will work with Chinese wildcard rider Wai On Cheung in the 125cc Grand Prix event in Shanghai on Sunday. Cheung will ride an Ajo Motorsports 125cc Honda. Despite Walters’ young age, it is not the first time he has been involved with the Ajo Motorsports team. He has already worked with them at the last three Australian MotoGPs at Phillip Island, contributing to all aspects of setting up and maintaining the racing machines. But on Sunday, the same day he celebrates becoming a teenager, he will take on the responsibility of being second only to Ajo’s senior mechanic.

Mundine decision shortly

AUCKLAND – Boxer Anthony Mundine says he’ll decide within a matter of days which NRL club he’ll join after his rescheduled world title fight. Mundine has also gone back on his comment earlier in the week that he only intended to play rugby league for the remainder of the 2005 season, saying he’ll rethink his football future at the end of the year. “I’m not sure. I’ll reassess that after the year is out … how my body’s holding up and stuff like that,” Mundine told New Zealand’s Radio Sport in an interview broadcast this week. The all-round sportsman mentioned St George Illawarra and the NZ Warriors as being among clubs he is considering joining.

Sizzling Els fires 62

SHANGHAI – World No.3 Ernie Els produced a sizzling 10-under-par 62 to take a four-stroke clubhouse lead in the second round of the Asian Open yesterday. The South African carded eight birdies and closed with a superb eagle for a halfway total of 15-under 129 in the co-sanctioned European and Asian tours event. New Zealand’s Eddie Lee was his closest challenger early in the second round after the Asian Tour professional fired a 66. Els is still working on minor changes to his game after finishing a lowly 47th at the U.S. Masters, but he looked back to his best in steamy Shanghai.
