Beach plan for York Cove resort

Mr Stewart, who is developing the site with Launceston entrepreneur Joe Chromy, said that the George Town Council should receive a development application in the first half of next month.

If the approval process went smoothly, construction could start in September and the resort could be built in stages over three to four years.

The development on 1.5ha owned by Mr Chromy would use ideas from his Old Launceston Seaport development and be a “people place”.

Mr Stewart said the development would include a 20 to 24-berth marina, 20 apartments, 12 residential blocks and a three-level building with restaurant, bar, reception area, gym, swimming pool and conference room.

The boat ramp will be upgraded and open to the public and boardwalks will be built.

There will also be car parking and amenities for the disabled.

“We are really trying to make it a place where the public want to go,” Mr Stewart said. “Also, we would like to think we could have a really good beach facility.

“It’s important to have some public space … the place will only work if there are people there.

“It needs to be a resort, not a hotel – because it’s not just a hotel, it’s a mixture of living.”

Mr Stewart said the beach would involve pumping sand on to the cove shoreline and creating an attractive area for people to relax, but this was subject to approval.

The apartments would all have three bedrooms but a dual key system would allow custom configuration for both long and short-term living.
