Logistical hurdles for polling date

Speculation is rife of an election, possibly within weeks. Some are predicting new Prime Minister Julia Gillard will strike while she’s hot in the polls and call an August 7 election. That would mean an announcement in the coming days. While it might make sense for the Government to capitalise on its newfound popularity, such a tight timeframe would present some logistical problems, such as getting the new PM’s name and face on election material.Others believe August 21 or 28 are more likely dates. The resources super profits tax row should be well and truly sorted and it will look less like the Government is rushing to an early poll.Either way, Ms Gillard will want to put herself before the people before old grievances like the school building program and insulation debacle tarnish her newly minted prime ministership. And another thing … John Howard has missed out on becoming ICC president, no doubt a bitter blow for the cricket tragic. His bid faltered after he lost the support of African playing nations. Or could it be that footage of his attempt to bowl on a dusty track in Pakistan in 2004 was too humiliating to overcome?
